Named after the monkey-god Hanuman, the Andaman are unbelievably beautiful island in the sun. The Andaman and Nicobar group of 293 island in the Bay of Bangal stretch over 700 km. Port Blair is the capital.After the Great Rebellion of 1857, a penal settlement for Indian freedom fighters was set up here by the British, and prisoners languished here right up to 1945. The National Flag was first hoisted here in 1943 by the great leader, Subhas Chandra Bose.Rich, evergreen rain forests abound on these island, which have abundance bird life and a multi-color under-water world of sea-life. The water in exotic shades of green, blue and turquoise is like a sheet of clear glass through which one can view the coral beds.

WHAT TO SEE

The Cellular Jail, the Bastille of India, now a national memorial, where India's freedom fighters were incarcerated by the British in single room cells from where they could not see or communicate with anyone. Also Museum attached to the Jail.

The Chatham Saw Mill, where rare species of timber can be seen.
Marine Museum, with 350 species of sea-life.
Anthropological Museum.
Corbyn's Cove, a picturesque beach

EXCURSIONS

Burmah Nalla (17 km.), where lumber operations are carried out by trained elephants.
Madhuban (14 km.), where elephants are trained.
Sippighat Farm (14 km.). Agriculture demonstration farm where tropical cash crops and spice are grown.
Wandoor Beach (28 km.), offer a picturesque landscape and it is ideal for swimming. This area has been declared the the Marina National Park.
Chiriya Tapu (30 km. ). This southern tip of South Andaman is also known as Bird Island.

Hope Town, Panighat, Lord Mayo was assassinated by an Afghan convict here.
North Bay, a long and sandy beach.
Viper Island, which used to be the penal settlement before the constitution of the Cellular Jail.
Ross Island, administrative headquarters during the Raj days. there are many monuments here.
Grub, Red Skin, Jolly Buoy, Boat, Snob and Cinque Island. These are picturesque island offering exotic coral and marine life. Sandy, virgin beaches and crystal clear water are ideal for snorkeling, diving and under water photography.
