BEAUTIFUL BENGAL
Bengal beauty Digha
Tucked in one corner of West Bengal, Digha’s pristine beach and Casuarina plantations make for an ideal getaway for people from the eastern part of India.
Beaches have always been one of the most sought after retreats and India being a peninsula, there is an array of exotic options for tourists. The Bay of Bengal on the eastern frontier of India provides for pristine beaches. The beaches of West Bengal are untouched and far from the madding crowd, making them apt as weekend destinations.
In the south western region of West Bengal lies the coastal town of Digha. The peace of the place immediately overwhelms tourists as it is famous for its beaches. Discovered as early as the days of Warren Hastings, who referred it as the ‘Brighton of the East’, Digha is divided into old and new Digha. New Digha is exclusively cut out for holidays. A preferred destination for honeymoonersof nearby states, Digha’s picturesque spots are ideal for newly married couples.
The best way to begin a day in Digha is to get up early and watch the sunrise.
It will cast a spell on you. Take a walk on the sprawling beach and let the
fresh morning breeze caress you. The casuarinas along the coast provide a
picture perfect backdrop for a romantic outing. These plantations also have
an
ecological purpose: they hold the ground together and
prevent erosion of the soil.
Vacationers laze on the beach and when the mercury starts rising they take
a cool dip in the sea because by that time the high tide makes way for the
low tide, making it safer for swimmers. Vendors put up stalls on the beach
to sell coconuts. Apart from the fun and fervour in the beach, vacationers
can also visit the biggest marine aquarium in Asia, which is close to the
Digha Hospital. Or one can visit Chandeshwar, close to Digha. The ancient
Shiva temple here attracts people.
ATTRACTIONS AROUND DIGHA
Shankarpur:
A recent discovery, Shankarpur is a virgin beach. Located 14 km away from Digha
it is being developed as a sea resort with hotels that would offer all the pleasures of a private beach with Casuarina plantations.
Junput:
Another beach resort of West Bengal, although the beach here is usually exposed only when the tide ebbs.
Mandarmani:
A pristine beach resort in the vicinity of Digha, Mandarmani is a comparatively new destination and offers exciting options to travellers. The beach here is motorable; in fact it is the longest motorable beach in India. But tourists have to take care not to drive on the beach during the night time.
