TINGCHINKHANG- 6020 MTS. PEAK. SIKKIM

DestinationKolkatta-Bagdogara-Yaksom-Bakhim-Sumity Lake
Total Duration:
22 days.
Best Time: Mid April to Mid May and Mid October to Mid November.
Grade: Difficult/ Technical.

Tingchinkhang has been previously summitted only once. It was an Indian / British Army Expeditions in May 1999.
Sonam Lepcha, our mountain guide was leading the expedition and along with him 6 people had reached the top.
There have been some more attempts including the expedition we had in April 2003 at the peak, but none have been successful.

During our last expedition in April, we had followed the following itinerary, due to the shortage of time of the clients even this was not successful.

April 19: Climb to ABC at (roughly) 15,000 ft
April 20: Climb to Camp I at (roughly) 18300 ft
April 21: Summit
April 22: Extra climbing day
April 23: Extra climbing day
April 24: Extra Climbing day

We had kept 4 days just for the climb but due to bad weather had to turn back from camp II. Since we had no extra time to wait and sit out the bad weather, considering this factor we would recommend at least 5 to 6 days for the climb, to make it a success this time!!

The description of the peak :
From ABC to Camp 1 there is a face where ropes will have to be fixed and so it is advisable to spend a nigh at ABC so that the ropes can be fixed from early morning the next day and it would also help in acclimatization
There are seracs enroute and probably a few crevasses may be open depending the time of the year.
The climbing is a technical one upto half way above the Camp 2. There are stretches where it involves just walking up the mountain.
From the steep ramp the summit is about 3 hrs away.

One of the most scenic treks in the Himalay, offering stunning views of Ka ngchendzonga ( 3rd highest peak in the world) and several other 7000 mtr. Peaks.
