The largest and most distant of three islands off Lombok’s northwest coast, Gili Trawangan’s appeal is due less to stun¬ning tropical beauty, and more to the fact that it’s a virtual clone of what Kuta Beach on Bali was three decades ago. If you’re hungry for the old Bali, you’ll love Gili Trawangan and the charming, quiet white sand beach that rings the island, fringed with rustic accommodation.
Trawangan’s other attractions lie be¬neath the sea. Grab your snorkel, mask and flippers and saunter down the beach, slip into the clear water and glide over vast gardens of blue coral, teeming with brilliantly coloured fish. This is one of the best dive sites around Lombok, but watch out for strong currents, especially in the strait between Trawangan and neighbouring Gili Meno.
